Facebook and Twitter have become a global phenomenon, transforming the way we communicate both on a professional and a personal level. But which one is more effective?
A Daily Telegraph reporter recently gave a speech about social media, making it clear he’s in Team Twitter, and warned against using Facebook for business. The journo in question, Neil Midgely, said PROs and journalists should use ‘magic’ Twitter, which was both a professional tool and a personal pastime. He praised Twitter’s immediacy and added that it was a great way to test stories, get feedback and find ‘tiny acorns’ to lift stories.
At Viva Towers we too are in Team Twitter, as it is easy to navigate and update, and we find it a very fast, interactive tool.
But we think Facebook still has advantages as a professional tool, providing it is used correctly. We have witnessed some hugely successful Facebook campaigns, including the battle to boycott the X Factor Christmas No 1, which attracted 1000s of members and scored a great winner.
People have both professional and personal personas and as the lines continue to blur, it's up the individual to make sure they use social networking sites in an appropriate context for their audience. Both Twitter and Facebook are simply communication tools; both will continue to evolve as users find new ways to extract value.
However, only time will tell which is the long-term winner in the rapidly changing social networking craze.
Now we’re off to get Tweeting – follow us @VivaTweets.
