Is the power of social media set to prevail once again? Following the BBC’s announcement that it is to close its digital radio station 6 Music, the next song on the station had barely kicked in before a ‘Save 6 Music’ Facebook page was set up by angry listeners.
By the end of yesterday, more than 90,000 people had joined the group. Nice work.
The Facebook group has been set up by the man who masterminded the Rage Against the Machine campaign, saving the nation from the annual Christmas Number 1 X-Factor garbage, and proves the growing power of social networking as a force for change.
Will this latest campaign have the same impact as the one for Rage against the Machine? With the backing of several high-profile celebrities, including David Bowie and the Manic Street Preachers, and support from thousands of listeners, it has certainly got clout.
