NEVER judge a book by its cover – or so the saying goes.
However, the reality is we all do to some degree.
Take Tony Blair’s soon-to-be-published tome, The Journey.
It’s the most eagerly awaited political memoir since Margaret Thatcher’s ‘The Downing Street Years’, and Mr Blair stares out from the front cover looking relaxed and self-confident in an open-necked shirt.
You can bet the publishers have spent hours, if not weeks, agonizing over the minutiae of that image.
That’s because in life – and in publishing – we do often judge a book by its cover, which is why firms spend millions trying to portray the right image.
But whilst you may be able to own your ‘brand’, you can never own your reputation.
That’s why employing a good PR firm, which is well versed in the mechanics of managing reputations, is so important because, ultimately, ‘image’ is about so much more than just clever advertising slogans and carefully air-brushed photographs.
