Our fiercely private Prime Minister has hit the headlines after openly crying in front of TV cameras when talking about the death of his baby daughter.
There has been a mixed response to Gordon Brown publicly baring his soul to Piers Morgan, in an interview set to be screened on TV next week. Alastair Campbell says he believes showing his human side will do Brown good, as he is always portrayed as a serious, reserved politician and rarely seen to open up in public.
It’s hardly surprising that Brown broke down after talking about such a painful experience, but the decision to give such an open interview in the run-up to the general election was perhaps a risk.
The Tories have attacked Brown, accusing him of playing the sympathy card in a bid to win votes.
Whether it was a publicity stunt or not, it has certainly attracted media attention and I’m sure the interview will pull in viewers when it is aired.
It will be interesting to see how Brown’s interview is perceived, and whether it will prove to be a shrewd move, or actually end up doing more harm than good.
