In September 1997 Bolton Wanderers Football Club opened the doors on a new chapter in its history when it moved to the Reebok Stadium.
Approaching the 10th anniversary the club asked Tony Garner of Viva to research and write the inside story of one of the most colourful eras for the club.
Bolton Wanderers: 10 Years At The Reebok was written over a six-month period by Tony, who was granted unprecedented behind the scenes access for interviews with players past and present, plus backroom staff, board members and the club owner Eddie Davies.
As well as charting the development of the Reebok from dream to award-winning reality, the book reflects on the events on the field during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history, through the eyes of the people that made it happen.
A former sports journalist, Tony is also a long-standing contributor to the award winning Bolton Wanderers official matchday programme.
“The hero of the story wasn’t one individual but an entire football club, who, in an era where money dominates, managed to punch well above their weight in terms of expectations, finances and player recruitment," says Tony.
“How a struggling Football League side like Bolton were transformed into a respected European side doesn’t have one simple answer. The fact they managed to pull it off makes it a fascinating story for football fans generally.
"Writing the book gave me access to lots of key figures in the Reebok story, both past and present, and it’s an interesting tale. From the outset I felt it was important to try to get under the skin of the club. The best way of doing that was to talk to the people who had shaped the events — not just the players, but the backroom staff, the officials, the board, the owner and, of course, the supporters.”
