Project:
Out of the blue opera singer Sean Ruane was asked to perform English cricket’s newly adopted anthem 'Jerusalem' ahead of the Old Trafford Test Match against Australia during the 2005 Ashes series. He was such a hit with the ECB, he became the side’s musical mascot at each of the subsequent matches, and was also asked to perform at the Trafalgar Square victory celebrations. But that was just the start…
Strategy:
We had to respond very quickly to this opportunity to allow Sean the chance to maximise the exposure his involvement would bring. The series was over within a few short weeks of his initial involvement, but there was intense media interest in everything surrounding the English cricket team. We put together a campaign exploiting various angles — Sean’s brush with Shane Warne, his hopes for a Christmas number one, what it was like to be the only sober man at Trafalgar Square.
Results:
The resulting press coverage took in TV (including ITV, Sky News and the BBC), radio and newspapers, both in this country and in Ireland, where Sean has a large following. It generated huge interest in Sean generally. The success of his performances and its coverage has also opened up further commercial avenues for Sean’s career.
He says:
"Dynamic, creative and effective PR is vital for my career — that’s why we chose Viva."
