Some magazines claim to offer editorial if a client pays a colour separation charge or advertising. If that's their policy that's fine but your copy then becomes advertorial and is consequently devalued.
In some sectors there are an awful lot of magazines who only exist on their colour sep charges. However, the golden rule to keep in mind is that these don't tend to be the key titles that decision makers are going to be looking at.
Rules are there to be broken...especially by us.
If it's vanity you are after, or you know the rewards for appearing in a particular title are worth it, then pay the colour sep charges.
