Managing the media is a delicate business. Their agenda is different to yours. They are intersted in a story for their readers. Full stop. They aren't intersted in how thaty story might be perceived by your staff or clients.
But if you refuse to play the game and take the 'hang up' approach then you have a real problem. You have lost any sort of control and as far as the reporter is concerned they have done their job and given you an opportunity to give your side.
You might not always want to say a great deal but what you need to do is buy time. Plan your response and try to think about how your words will be perceived by the people who are important to you. That's your statement.
9 times out of 10 — stating your case if better than a 'guilty' silence.
