Reporters have their own language. The verb 'to stun' is an essential weapon in the armory of your average sports reporter. Take it off most and it would be like stealing wheelchairs from a hospital.
It's expressive, punchy language but it is useful too, as headline writers love short words they can squeeze into the limited space.
A powerful, vivid writing style is characteristic of journalism because it adds a little drama for the readers.
Of course, the best stories, the real stunners, like the fall of the Twin Towers, the rise of Obama, or the closure of an iconic retailer like Woolworths don't need hyperbole.
They simply stun.
