Blackburn College

How to bring national media exposure to a provincial college.

Brief:

A level results day – national TV coverage

Aim:

Our aim each year us to highlight the achievements of the college. Of course we target regional press and radio, and but we also always look to use results day interest to promote the college on a national platform.

Strategy:

1) Compile a list of potential student case studies from all over
East Lancashire. These focus on a variety of skill sets and achievements in order to highlight the diversity of the college and its reputation for being a progressive centre.
2)  Put together a regional and national TV and radio proposal, offering the opportunity to feature students opening their results live, as well as interviews of students at the college.
3)  Approach regional and national broadcast media.
4)  Help the media producers and promote the college's achievements - not always the same thing.

Outcome:

In recent years we have successfully pitched to the likes of Sky, GMTV and the BBC. As well as filming on results day, they have pre-record interviews with students at the college. Viva has always handled the media on the day, as well as preparing and distributing a series of case studies to other media.

Results:

Regular national and regional exposure on results day for the college, helping to raise its profile and underscore the achievements of the students.
