The Career Advice Every PR Professional Needs with Steve Dunne

Not many people can trace their career back to the tender age of 16. Most of us are still in school. But for this week’s podcast guest, Steve Dunne, that’s when his comms journey started.

Steve began his career as an apprentice in the British Telecom press office, where his he met his mentor and lay the foundations that pushed him onto leadership roles at British Telecom, HSBC and South African Airways.

In this episode, Steve discusses how he uses his career experience to help develop people at all levels of PR and communications through training.

Becoming a go-to person in your company: For Steve, respect does not come from age, seniority or title – it’s forged by people seeing value in you. Building up an area of expertise and making yourself invaluable to a company can be the foundation to build a successful career from.

Keep a log of your success: Imposter syndrome can affect even the most experienced of professionals. But, as Steve says, keeping a physical record of your career successes acts as a reminder of what you are capable of. When self-doubt begins to creep in, a physical record of your achievements is a great way to shake it off.

A good mentor can change your trajectory: The lessons Steve learnt from his mentor, Vivian, helped shape the trajectory of his career. Her advice challenged him and gave him the confidence to speak up in a room full of experienced seniors. But the value of mentorship works both ways. When the time comes, the lessons of your career should be passed on to the next generation.

Your career is your own to manage: Employers can invest in training, mentors can open doors and managers can be a be an advocate, but, as Steve was taught, the spark must come from you. Real career progression comes from taking control of your own path.

Clarity will provide credibility: Having the ability to explain the role of PR with clarity and confidence, without the use of industry language and jargon, can help build the foundation of a strong client relationship. If a client can’t understand the extent of what you do, they will never be able to value your impact.

Success is built long before you reach the top of the career ladder. If you are at the start of your career or looking to develop your expertise, this episode offers the practical habits and lessons that will help you do exactly that.
